Today when I had my Pilates lesson I was taught by an instructor who has had excellent training, but less teaching experience than I have. She felt intimidated (just as I do when I have to teach other more experienced instructors), and whilst she taught me, she made the comment that there was nothing for her to correct. As sweet or flattering as that is to hear, it is entirely untrue. I can’t foresee a day when I look at myself in the mirror and say ‘I am now the perfect instructor who can perfectly execute every Pilates exercise’. No matter who teaches you try to find something, some small nugget to take away with you and use in your next session. Today, mine was to lift through the sternum and stop clenching my bum to gain torso extension. I didn’t even realise I was clenching! It is hard to find that balance in life where we are neither too timid nor too self assured but I believe we must try. Just a touch of humility and a touch of self assuredness go a long way.
